Communities in Bloom Project Needs Plants!

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The London & Middlesex Housing Corporation (LMHC) is excited to announce our first Communities in Bloom project, at 241 Simcoe Street – a high-rise building of rent-geared-to-income public housing units in London’s SoHo community.

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian nonprofit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program, with focus on the promotion and value of green spaces in urban settings.

This project will benefit the low-income residents of 241 Simcoe Street, and also help make London’s SoHo community more attractive and enjoyable to live in.

LMHC has consulted with plant experts and is hiring a Fanshawe College landscape design student to design, prepare, plant and tend the beds alongside our tenants. The project will emphasize perennial, drought-resistant and easily maintained, attractive landscaping that will endure year after year. Generous partners including Try Recycling are donating mulch and compost.

How can you help? LMHC has a limited budget for plants and shrubs for this project, and we also want to encourage community involvement.

When you’re cleaning up your gardens and dividing your perennials this spring, please keep us in mind. We need many plants (especially perennials such as hostas, daylilies, iris and cone flowers) to fill several beds that we have planned. We also hope to plant ground covers such as ivy and myrtle (vinca) in our treed areas where grass won’t thrive, and would even welcome small shrubs such as euonymous.

To arrange plant drop-off, please call 519-434-2765 extension *207.
