Once again this summer, LMHC provided groups of tenants with supplies and plants to beautify our housing communities. This year, teams from several buildings and one family community participated in the judged contest. The judging was completed on July 15, and we are pleased to announce the winning teams.

For the third year in a row, the team from 10 York Street in Newbury came in first place. Their large property features several beds with a mix of perennials that have been nurtured over the years. Each summer they add brightly coloured annuals in pleasing combinations to edge the beds, and use unique features like old benches and chairs to display container plants.

For the second year in a row, two teams from 632 Hale Street tied for second place. The Hale Street teams have lovingly tended their respective beds – which stretch around nearly all sides of the building! – caring for perennials and adding colourful annuals every year. If you look closely to the south of the front door, you may even see a few tomato plants!

Three teams – from 1481 Limberlost Road, 872 William Street and 30 Base Line Road West – tied for third place this year.

The Limberlost team maintains a common flower bed at the corner of Limberlost Road and Ardsley Road. Its sunny red and white impatiens, as well as hostas and other perennials, make this spot a highlight of the neighbourhood. The dark cedar mulch they’ve chosen nicely highlights the bright plants.

The gardeners at 872 William Street have many lovely roses in the flower beds at the front of their building, which they supplement with colourful annuals every year.

One team at 30 Base Line Road West has brightened the front entrance with a profusion of bright annuals.

This year LMHC would also like to commend gardeners at 39 Tecumseh Avenue East, 200 Berkshire Drive and 30 Base Line Road West with honorable mentions.

At 39 Tecumseh Avenue East in particular, the gardeners enthusiastically experiment with a variety of perennials of different heights and colours, rather than sticking with popular favorites year after year.

LMHC would also like to thank the many gardeners at our family communities who used plants and supplies to beautify their home gardens. All participants who were not awarded prizes or honorable mentions will receive Tim Horton’s gift certificates.
